“You have to expect things of yourself before you can expect things of others.”

MICHAEL JORDAN

If you believe and trust in someone to help you, then you can do things that are sometimes seemingly out of reach.

Emma has been an Equestrian coach for over thirty years and brings a huge wealth of knowledge and experience to the role. She had a very successful career as a three day eventer and has competed at international level respresenting GB, riding at major events including Badminton and Burghley. She has been managing, coaching, supporting and advising event riders up to 5 star level for thirty years. Since 2003 guiding youth teams, including coaching the National Irish Junior (U18) Equestrian Team in five European Championships and the National GB (U21) Equestrian Coach for thirteen years. When Emma stepped down from the role of GB coach they'd won twenty-three European medals.

Emma has an inclusive attitude to coaching:

"When I meet a rider for the first time, I have to assess what kind of learner they are. I talk to them, listen, read their body language and get a sense of who they are and what the best way to explain things to them will be. The rider then puts what they've learnt into action. It's essential that the rider understands and takes responsibility for their learning. I want the rider to own the lessons and feel empowered through learning. I appreciate that people learn at different speeds and that the tortoise can outrun the hare. Going through school with dyslexia has given me patience, empathy and a real understanding that people learn in different ways. The relationship of coach and rider is built on trust and respect and a good coach is able to match the type of instruction to the rider's needs."

While the focus of the coaching sessions is on technique and competition riding, Emma will also help with performance psychology. She encourages the rider to set SMART goals for themselves: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-Specific. By putting in place pre-performance routines and coping strategies the rider will gain confidence and learn how to overcome anxiety for the big events.
